Becoming an ACCA world prize winner is a dream held by many including one Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera scholar, Putra Aqil Qarin bin Zulaadi. Deciding course pathway

Why accountancy?

I chose to pursue Accountancy because I believe I am good with numbers. Having taken Accounting Principles for SPM, it was easily one of my favourite and strongest subjects. It also helps that I know I don’t like doing work involving skills in inventing, or repairing. Hence, by eliminating these options, it reaffirms my passion in studying Accountancy.

How did you decide on studying this course pathway of CAT then ACCA?

While looking over my options, I knew I wanted to pursue a course that will be important to my career in 4 years’ time. Furthermore, I discovered that there were not many chartered accountant in Malaysia and the qualification from ACCA will provide a strong pathway.

On a personal note, I wanted to pursue a different pathway compared to my brother and cousins who opt for diploma before going on to degree. If possible, I wanted to finish my studies as quick as possible so that I can help my parents to support my sister’s education.

How did you find out about this Professional Accounting scholarship by Yayasan Peneraju?

I found about this scholarship from my accounting teacher in boarding school last year. She explained in detail about ACCA and the foundation program of CAT, along with the universities are offers this course. Upon researching further, I came upon Sunway TES and applied for the scholarship through iScholar. It was a good learning process as there were assessments and interviews; and I am grateful that I was awarded this scholarship by Yayasan Peneraju and Malaysia Professional Accountancy Centre (MyPAC).

Exam preparations and strategies

What did you do to prepare for your exams?

Most important strategy I used was consistent revision. For example, I revised all my notes and important points, which I focused more on facts such as definitions, pros and cons and factors. In addition, I worked all my EDC (Exam Driven Course) questions given by my lecturer. Most of the questions were past exam questions. There were many questions, which helped  in improving my skillsin answering calculation questions and helped me gaining more information about facts questions.

Lastly, I practiced on all the practice questions in ACCA Global Education Hub. These questions were similarly reflected in the  final exam questions, because they were provided by ACCA itself. Answering all questions before final exam greatly improved my confidence ahead of time.

Before I end my revision for the day, I will read up the textbook about the new chapters or parts that will be covered on the next day. So, on the next day, it will help me understand what my lecturer is teaching. I would like to give a special shout-out to my lecturer in Sunway TES and my peers because they helped a lot in distributing all the notes and questions.

How do you strike a Balance between studies and leisure?

I enjoy playing sports in the evening with my friends. I will proceed with my studies and my revision in the night at college. During the weekend, I enjoy playing computer games with friends and sometimes watching movies at cinema or go back home and spent my time with my beloved family. Despite all the leisure activities, I always ensure that I shift my focus to studies when final exams are two weeks away. This was useful during my high school days, and it is still working now that I am in university.

Moving forward…

Do you have someone that you look up to for motivation/inspiration? Who would that be?

My inspiration for now is Datuk Zaiton Mohd Hassan. She achieved a lot with her ACCA qualification. She is currently part of Sime Darby Senior Independent Non-Executive Director, Bank Islam Independent Non-Executive Director, BIMB Holding Berhad Independent Non-Executive Director, and MyPAC Chief Executive Officer. She spends a lot of time giving speeches to young students, meeting with scholars, and encouraging them to achieve good scores in final exams. She is incredibly awesome. I envy with her.

What is your aspiration?

I want to become a successful Chartered Accountant, be recognized as a member of ACCA, and work as a manager at one of the Big 4 accounting companies.  My life-goal is to give my parents and siblings a comfortable life after all they have done for me.

As Putra continues his journey to become a Chartered Accountant, we wish him all the best in his continued success!
